Leviathans of Niechorze

A black-and-white triptych of traditional fishing boats resting on the beach at Niechorze, on Poland’s Baltic coast. Here, boats are launched from and pulled onto the sand rather than moored in a harbour. Photographed in the last light of day, their heavy hulls and silhouetted masts lose their everyday function and become something closer to sleeping sea creatures: part document of a working craft, part meditation on waiting and endurance.

As the light ebbs away, the fishing boats stay on the sand like giant animals the sea has entrusted to the land for safekeeping. Masts point to the sky, hulls remember the deep. Between salt and sand there is only the smell of nets and the wait for a dawn that will bring the waves back.

Gdy światło odpływa, kutry zostają na piasku jak olbrzymie zwierzęta, które morze oddało lądowi na przechowanie. Maszty wskazują niebo, kadłuby wspominają głębię. Między solą a piaskiem zostaje tylko zapach sieci i czekanie na świt, który przyniesie falę.
